Each soldier was issued a one pound, steel helmet. In the war, this was their best friend. Not only did it protect their head, but it had many other uses as well.
Their helmet served as a wash-basin, cooking cauldron, emergency latrine, entrenching tool, and even a deadly blunt weapon when combat came to close quarters.
